Winter Week

After a week of good old-fashioned winter weather, things are looking a little better around here. We had 31.5″ of snow in the last 7 days. Finally, a week of winter, to help rescue us from another weak winter. I am thinking I will be up on the roof this week. #ILoveWinter.

Ice in the air

A couple of days ago, I went in search of nearby winter weather. I found ice. Everywhere.

ice grass

Every blade, every twig, encased in ice.

iced needles

Spruce needles bulk up with ice.

icing everything

There was ice in the fog, and on everything I could see.

icy grip

Branches are pretty cool, but these branches take that to a new level.

If any surface was exposed, it had ice on it or ice hanging from it.

24 Hours in February

Thursday I was at my Mom and Dad’s house and I was struck by the greenery of the yard, specifically because it was so green, on February 4th here in New Hampshire. The scene was quite abnormal for this time of winter here in the Northeast. The temperature at the time was somewhere around 54°F, which was also an anomaly.

Way too green and warm for southern NH on Feb. 4th.

Then, on Friday we received 6.5″ of snow at my house. There were communities around us that received anywhere from 5″ to 9″ of snow on Friday. Many schools were closed, and just like that, in 24 hours it felt like winter again.

Friday morning the snow was falling at a pretty good clip. The snow, in all of it's purity, renews all it covers.

As I put this piece together and post it to my blog, on Monday, the 8th of February, it is snowing again in southern NH. It’s a cold, snowy day, and the temperature (with wind) feels like 8°F. We are still some 45″ of snow shy of our normal winter average, and I doubt we will hit the average or even get close. Then again, you never know what is in store for us the rest of this winter…and beyond.

By late afternoon the sun made an appearance so we could see it set. The bright, yellowish glow on the white coated trees was a sight to see.

Warm Up by the Fire

After salting and sanding the driveway with buckets and shovel, moving even more snow, and doing some light recycling, I decided to warm up by a fire in the snow. ‪#‎ilovewinter‬

Snow Streak

Here in my yard, in Goffstown, NH we have seen snow in the following amounts over the last 20 days or so. I know these are not necessarily record-breaking, and that others have seen a lot more, but this is a pretty good run none the less. I do love all four seasons and here in NH I do feel that we get a good taste of each season annually. So even though the air temperature was -8°F when I went to bed last night and my driveway needed snow blowing again today because of the snow that had blown into open areas at depths of several feet; I still love winter. Late this afternoon I spent another hour or two outside working in the cold and the snow. There’s just something special about the crisp, cold air, and taking in a deep breath of it while pondering the white world around me. #ilovewinter

Warmed by memories and this reality of cozy white.
