Taken Home

Remembering my cousin, one year later.


Cancer may have taken another earlier today
But with that thought there’s some things to say

Disease didn’t win, nor was there a defeat
Rather another daughter next to our Lord’s seat

Tonight is the night on earth we say good-bye
For many, the questions asked begin with why

Sometime this morning, she left us well before dawn
She bid farewell to the machines she depended on

She was my cousin, a friend I knew less as time passed
But, still my cousin, my friend, taken home so fast

As a kid she was there, a part of our family together
Memories we both shared that will last forever

Tonight she no longer needs that special bed
And there’s no more pain when she turns her head

Tonight her smile’s the brightest it could ever be
The strain in her eyes, gone, were she to look at me

Good eating

Yesterday my three year old daughter and I were sharing some leftovers for lunch. Jacqueline was enjoying some bites of the pasta and was cordial enough to say, “Thanks for sharing your food Dad.” This was very nice, but what really got me was what she said when we finished. I told her it was all gone. And as if I needed the encouragement, she said, “Really good job eating Dad!” Thanks sweetheart now I have to be better at eating less.
